Tutes(How-To)

I know what you're thinking, "Tegan, the stuff you make is so cool, it must take you forever.  I could never do that. Also, your 'About Me' picture is so pretty."
Well you're in luck!  This is the place where I'll write about how I did some of the stuff you see on my blog (and in my house).

My (our) New (old) Dresser
It's super easy to make-over your old wooden furniture, trust me.  If you have about 3 days and don't mind getting a little dirty then you can easily turn something shitty into something pretty.  Here we go!

The stuff you need:
  1.  A small or medium roller (you can buy a kit for about $7 at Home Depot or Walmart).
  2. Paint (splurge on high quality paint, half a quart will do a lot)
  3. Sand paper (A multi-pack would be perfect)
  4. A mask
  5. A brush
  6. Some rags and something to put water in.
First!  Dip a q-tip in some nail polish remover and rub it on the existing finish of your furniture. If the finish comes off then its acrylic, if not its oil.  Choose your paint accordingly (oil won't stick to acrylic...trust me).

Next, take things out of/off of your thing-that-you-are-making-over.  Also, remove the handles. Going through old furniture can be fun, you can find all sorts of things you've never seen before.

Then sand your dresser.  This step is the worst. but scuffing it up will help the paint adhere so you don't end up with paint chips every time you run into it with the vacuum.  The point is not to take off the existing finish but to create some roughage (roughage is good for everything).  Wear the mask for this step, or your lungs will look something like my dresser.

Wipe down the dresser with a damp rag then paint.  Follow the directions on the side of the can.  You may need more than one coat, actually I recommend more than one coat, and that's it.  Easy peasy!

If you're doing a dresser than feel free to stack your Dwight bobble head, a spray-painted lamp, and beautiful photos of yourself on the top.
